THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT

Meet the owners

Kathleen Coates, AuD

Owner and audiologist

Dr. Kathleen Coates earned a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing science, with a minor in aging studies, from Ohio State University, and her Doctor of Audiology from the Northeast Ohio AuD Consortium of Kent State University, the University of Akron and Cleveland Clinic. She completed her clinical externship at Wake Forest Baptist Health.

Before opening the practice she worked alongside a neurotologist in Raleigh, with experience in cochlear implants, osseointegrated hearing implants, hearing aids, balance assessment, tinnitus treatment and facial nerve monitoring during surgery. She started the Smithfield Running Club in 2017, serves on the board of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation, is an ambassador for the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina and gives free hearing seminars for local groups and senior centers.

Jordan Coates

Co-owner

Jordan Coates co-owns the practice. Opening a service-based business in his hometown had long been a goal of his.

HOW IT BEGAN

The practice’s story

Kathleen and Jordan Coates opened Coates Hearing Clinic in Smithfield in 2018 because they saw an unmet need for audiology care in their town. The practice now has offices in Smithfield, Clayton and Goldsboro.

New patients are booked for 45 to 90 minutes, depending on their history, to leave time for comprehensive testing, education and a treatment consultation.
